Happening this week:
ACS Monterey Bay Live Speaker Series 2026
The Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Cetacean Society invites members and the public to attend our next in-person meeting on Thursday, May 28, at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove.
Our featured speaker is Dr. John Ryan, Senior Research Specialist at MBARI, who will present “Tracking Blue Whales Through Sound.”
Dr. Ryan is a biological oceanographer who studies the ocean soundscape. Using hydrophones and acoustic monitoring technology, he tracks whale calls to better understand how whales communicate, forage, and respond to environmental stressors. His research provides valuable insights into the lives of blue whales and other marine mammals. Many attendees may recognize Dr. Ryan as the scientist who brings a giant subwoofer to presentations, allowing audiences to hear—and even feel—the powerful calls of blue whales, the loudest animals on Earth.

Let’s Go Whalewatching!
Register:
Please join Dr. Ted Cheeseman, Monterey Bay Whale Watch, and ACS Monterey Bay aboard the Sea Wolf II for an unparalleled whale watching experience in California’s renowned Monterey Bay.
Sundays: May 31, 2026 or June 28, 2026. Register here.
Both voyages leave from Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey, CA.
This is an exceptional opportunity to spend four hours on the water with one of the field’s most engaging whale scientists and naturalists. Ted is a passionate cetacean researcher and co-founder of Happywhale, a website and tracking system that engages citizen scientists to identify individual marine mammals, for fun and for science. He brings deep insight into the humpbacks, blues, orcas, and dolphins drawn to the bay’s productive submarine canyon.
Some may remember Ted from the fascinating talk he gave at our ACS Monterey Bay meeting in June, 2025.
We hope to see you onboard! Sundays: May 31, 2026 or June 28, 2026 or both!
